It stands as one of Nantucket’s greatest misconceptions that Altar Rock is the highest point on the Island. Anybody who is willing to make that statement is instantly looked upon as an outsider. The truth is, Mt. Madaket is the highest point. “What is that?” you say. It’s our majestic Dump, the Mountain That’s Always Growing. To most of the islanders it’s the last refuge where one can go on a Sunday to catch up on the chitchat of the Town. It’s the great landmark of Madaket, like Diamond Head is to Hawaii. Once in a blue moon you just might feel a rumble and it’s explained as simply a jet hitting the sound barrier. Well, don’t you believe that one because it’s old Mt. Madaket kicking. If you’re lucky, like the few in the memorable fall of 2005, you just might see her spew some of her volcanic smoke high up in the air.
